The mission for July is “A Brush with Kindness”. This is a home repair program that is a part of Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is known for building homes and creating homeownership opportunities for low-income families, but that’s not all we do. “A Brush With Kindness” program was begun in the United States in 1999 as a neighborhood revitalization program in the Twin Cities. Here in Door county, A Brush With Kindness program was started by Door County Habitat for Humanity in 2010.
A family should have the opportunity to affordably maintain and preserve their home. But many situations can create barriers in keeping up with repairs, including unexpected life events or loss of income. Families are stronger when they live in safe and stable homes. Some Brush With Kindness projects include re-roofing houses, building wheelchair ramps, scraping and painting home exteriors, and doing necessary repairs. Sometimes a church or charity will cover the costs of repairs and at other times the residents will pay for the materials on a no-interest payment plan. As always, the labor is donated by Habitat for Humanity volunteers.
A Brush With Kindness ensures that families live in safe and well-maintained homes. The program is designed to revitalize the appearance of the neighborhood, encourage connections within the community and most importantly, help preserve affordable housing in our community.
